Reading Buddies

The students have become reading buddies with the Grade 4/5 class. We have partnered one or two kindergarten students with a Grade 4/5 student. Each week we meet with the Grade 4/5 class and the students enjoy reading with their buddy. This is a great opportunity for everyone. The kindergartens get to know some older students in the school and are so happy when their reading buddy sees them throughout the day at school. It is also a great opportunity for the Grade 4/5, as they take a leadership role and it builds their confidence when reading to the younger students. We look forward to not only reading with our reading buddies, but also participating in various activities with them throughout the school year.

The Barber/Beauty Salon is Very Popular

The Barber/Beauty Salon was open for business early this morning.

The students were busy taking appointments that they received on their phone. We are encouraging students to write down the appointments.

Some customers finally arrived. They had their hair and nails done.

Another customer arrived and had her nails painted. Here she is getting ready to get her cape on for her hair appointment.

Another customer was getting her makeup done by one of the stylist!

At the end of the day, the students wrote a letter from the class to Mrs. Fernandez asking her to come and visit their salon. As you can see there is a lot of learning taking place at our drama centre.

Math

The students are engaging in math all around the classroom!

Some students have been busy sorting materials left at the math centre. A.K. enjoyed looking at the books at the math centre. Afterwards, he found some buttons and sorted them using an ice cube tray. A.K. said "I sorted the buttons by size".

We found G.D. sorting plastic circles at the light table. She told us: "I sorted the circles by the different colours".

L.M. made a pattern using glass stones that she found at the writing centre.

When we asked S.M. what she was making with the stones she said "It's 1 + 2 = 3". When we looked more carefully she had one stone, made a plus size using the stones, had another 2 stones, made an equal sign and then had 3 stones! So clever!

So as you can see the students have been very creative in the ways they have been exploring math around the classroom.

Barber/Hair/Beauty Salon

Our students opened their Barber/Hair Salon today! It was very exciting.

Appointments were made.

Some students went to the nail salon to get their nails done.

Other students made appointments to get their make-up done.

Some had their hair coloured.

A few were provided with all the services from the salon!

In the next few weeks we look forward to expanding our Barber Shop/Hair/Beauty Salon. Please let us know if you know of a barber and/or hairdresser that could come in to speak to our class about their job. Thanks!

Terry Fox

Today the boys and girls participated in the Terry Fox Run! After our school assembly, the students walked and ran around the back field.

Earl Beatty raised well over $2500 (the money from 6 classes was still be calculated after school on Friday! One student from our class even raised the most money of all the students in our school. She was given a Terry Fox t-shirt. We were so proud of her and all our students!!

Our Classroom Trees

The students in our class expressed curiosity towards the changes that are occurring in our schoolyard. We decided that we would choose a “classroom” tree and watch how it changes throughout the year.

We went outside and walked around our schoolyard looking for the perfect tree.

One student reminded the class that we need to choose a tree with “soft” leaves and not “piney” leaves. She explained that “evergreen trees are always green and will not change much”.

Students finally decided they wanted to observe 3 trees in our schoolyard:

Tree One:

Tree Two:

Tree Three:

After we decided on our 3 classroom trees, the students recorded their observations on their clipboards.

The Writing Centre

Students discovered that gems and mirrors were left at the Writing Centre for them to explore in any way they wanted.

Some students made the first letter of their name.

Some students used the gems to create their name.

Other students created a pattern picture with the gems.

We were very proud of the creative ways the students used the gems.

Meet Some of the Scientists in Our Class

Some students beginning to record some of their observations they made while outside on the back field.

Recording pictures of rocks that they discovered.

On the pavement recording some trees they saw in the back field of the school.

                                                         Writing what they discovered!

Light Table

Some of the children have been busy exploring various items on our light table and the reflections they create!

Play Day

Today the Grade 8s organized a playday afternoon for all the kindergarten classes. Even though it was chilly outside, all of the students seemed to have a great time! Here are some photos.
The first of the five stations our class visited was an obstacle course through the play structure.

We then did a beanbag toss where the students had a chance to throw some beanbags into hula hoops.

The students had a lot of fun fishing at the next station!

Students then participated in a relay sponge and water race. Students put their sponge into the bucket of water and raced across the field. They then squeezed all the water out of their sponge and into a small container.

The students finally participated in a parachute activity. Everyone had a great afternoon. When our students went back inside, some of the children decided to write a thank-you card to the Grade 8s. We are not sure who was more excited - the Grade 8s hearing the kindergartens thanking them for a great afternoon or our children going up to the 3rd floor of the school to deliver the thank-you card!
