Scientist in the School!

A BIG thank you to all the parents who volunteered to come in for Scientist in the School. We couldn't do these things without you! :)

Scientist Susan started out with an overview of what a scientist does, and what sorts of things the class would be learning about:

There was a centre about animals that burrow underground that the children learned about and even got to experience:

Another centre was about animals that live in water. The children got to taste test salt water vs fresh water, and talk about whether there is more salt water or fresh water on Earth, as well as what animals live in the water, what animals live on land and which animals go in both!:

The next centre was animals that live in trees. The children got to see what its like for birds to try to pick things up with their beaks by using tongs to pick up bugs and to try to build a nest:

The last centre they got to go to was with Scientist Susan, who spoke about signs of animals being places (such as chewed up logs for beavers) as well as animal's tracks:

Hopefully your child learned all sorts of neat things about animals and their homes that they can share with you! :)

Estimating & a Ukulele Concert!

Please remember: If you signed up to volunteer for Scientist in the School, we'd like you to be there around 12:15 so the scientist can tell you what we're doing and set up. Thanks!

Friday morning, the class learned about acrostic poems and some were very eager to start working on their own:

Some used dictionaries or asked friends for help finding words to describe themselves.

Ms. Alannah brought in her ukulele and some of the children put on a concert for the rest of the class:

In math, we began to talk about estimating, or making good guesses. We guessed how many cubes long G.D's arm was, and after we had made our estimate, G.F. came up to measure.  See if your child can remember if our estimate was close!

Learning About Length

This morning when reading our morning message, the children were challenged to find words with only two letters. We talked about whether there were more two letter words or less than yesterday (there were more today!)

The class was very excited that the cave was dry and ready to explore. They were very good about sharing and taking turns in the cave.

In math, we continued to talk about length. Their challenge today was to find something smaller than 10 cubes, something the same as 10 cubes and something longer than 10 cubes. See if your child can tell you some of the things they found!

There was nothing to go home in Thursday folders today, unless you signed up to volunteer for Scientist in the School or requested paper communications.

Please See A Very Important Message on the Class Announcements - thankyou!

Going on a Bear Hunt..

This morning when we came in, some of the children noticed that we had more flowers on our Christmas Cactus!

At centres, we finished off our cave:

Our finished cave. What do you think? Pretty "spooky" :) The hard part was waiting for it to dry! It should be ready to play with by tomorrow though!

We had a class discussion about what the cave reminded us of. I told them that it reminded me of a story and some of them guessed right away which story it reminded me of...
We read and acted out "We're Going on a Bear Hunt"  See if your child remembers what we packed in our imaginary backpacks before we left!

This afternoon, one of our high school co-op students came in and some of the children got to play a number matching game with him:

Teamwork

This morning when we went to the library, Ms. Tirkos read a story to the class called "Swimmy" and spoke about teamwork and working together and about how our class is like a team.  Maybe your child can tell you how the fish in the story worked together?

Some of the girls worked together to make a "giant snake"

Some of them enjoyed "Harold and the Purple Crayon" together on BookFlix
There was a delivery today that left us with a big empty box. We thought "instead of throwing it away, why don't we build something?" We did a vote and the children decided they wanted to make it into a cave!

The children got busy making "creepy, crawly things" for inside the cave...

Next, we needed to make the outside look more like a cave, so we mixed some grey paint and started to decorate:

We're going to work on finishing our cave tomorrow!

First Day Back!

Welcome back! We hope you all had a fantastic holiday and break!

This morning during centres, some of the children made some structures in the block centre:

While some of the other children decided to make holiday cards for their reading buddies:

They got to deliver them when some reading buddies came to visit during morning recess.

In music, Mrs. Donovan taught us some new songs and everybody got to dance:

In math, we began talking about length. The class was given a challenge:  In pairs, they had to go around the classroom and find things that were the same length as 10 cubes.

Here are some of the things they found:
A.K found that the bottom of the table leg was 10 cubes

J.M found that the hand sanitizer was 10 cubes

Q.G and A.H found a book that was 10 cubes wide

G.F found a number sign that was 10 cubes wide

Look at all the different things this group found!
