I See I Think I Wonder
Today one of our students was observing the changes that are occurring with our Meal Worms. Ask your child what they have observed. If they can't tell you, remind them to visit the Science Centre and make a few observations that they will be able to share with you when they return home.
Over Head Projector
Today we started an inquiry about shadows and reflections. When the students came into their classroom this morning, they discovered there was a new centre. We had our overhead projector set up with a few materials nearby. Both Mrs. Blakely and I made observations of what the students did with the materials left for them, and what observations and learning they did.
Part way through the morning, we shared two stories with the students. In the book "Shadows and Reflections", the students
observed the difference between a shadow and a reflection. They also
discovered some places where they can find both shadows and reflections. In the book "Guess Whose Shadow", the
students were shown different types of shadows and had to guess who the
shadow belonged to (e.g., a dog, a building, a person holding a toy
etc).
J.M. was excited to share what she knew about shadows: "Some shadows are behind you and some are in front of you, depending on where the sun it".
| "Wow - look what happens when I place one colour on top of another one. It makes a new colour". |
C. B. discovered that light passing through transparent plastic/glass makes a rainbow.
At lunch, the students went outside and discovered that many interesting things about their own shadows. We look forward to exploring more about our shadows outside on sunny days.

Building on The Students Interest of Surveys
Earlier we posted a post demonstrating how some students were creating their own surveys. Many of the students were focusing on "What is your favourite colour". They put various colours on their page and went around the class surveying their classmates. We were excited that some students did this on their own without us teaching them anything about surveys. Today we extended their learning by modeling other types of ways they could do surveys. If you are interested (or have time) discuss with your child other ways they can do surveys and how adults use surveys in the real world.
Continuing to Work on Fine Motor Skills
Here is another activity we are using to improve our students' fine motor skills:
The students use tweezers to pick up marbles and place them on top of the golf tee. The students then use the tweezers to take the marble off the golf tee. It is very challenging, but the students were eager to see how many marbles they could move, without dropping them!

Reading
Reading is happening continuously in our classroom. Students read a book when they enter in the morning. Students participate in reading the morning message and weekly poem each day. We read with students in small groups throughout the weeks. We group the students together depending on what they are working on. Some students are working on pointing to each word as they read (this is called one-to-one matching). Other students are working on using various strategies to solve unknown words (thinking of what makes sense, using the picture, using the first letter of a word, looking for a known part of a word etc). Finally, another group of students in our room are working on reading with expression and fluency. The students are also enjoying their take home books. Many of the students come to us and want to show us how they are reading. Students have many opportunities to read throughout their day. Here are some photos taken today while the students were in the library:
