Today we started an inquiry about shadows and reflections. When the students came into their classroom this morning, they discovered there was a new centre. We had our overhead projector set up with a few materials nearby. Both Mrs. Blakely and I made observations of what the students did with the materials left for them, and what observations and learning they did.
Part way through the morning, we shared two stories with the students. In the book "Shadows and Reflections", the students
observed the difference between a shadow and a reflection. They also
discovered some places where they can find both shadows and reflections. In the book "Guess Whose Shadow", the
students were shown different types of shadows and had to guess who the
shadow belonged to (e.g., a dog, a building, a person holding a toy
etc).
J.M. was excited to share what she knew about shadows: "Some shadows are behind you and some are in front of you, depending on where the sun it".
"Wow - look what happens when I place one colour on top of another one. It makes a new colour". |
C. B. discovered that light passing through transparent plastic/glass makes a rainbow.
At lunch, the students went outside and discovered that many interesting things about their own shadows. We look forward to exploring more about our shadows outside on sunny days.
