Straws & Connectors, boat testing and so much more!

We hope all the moms had a fantastic Mother's Day and enjoyed your gifts! :) 

We have this container with no name on it in our class and none of the children know who it belongs to. If it belongs to your child, please let us know so we can send it home with them:

We had a visit from Ms. Alannah yesterday! It was great to see her :) She did some writing with the class to our penpals. Ask your child who our penpals are, the seniors should definitely know!

 There isn't much happening in our science centre with our seeds. The only plant that is growing is our bean plant that doesn't even have dirt! We did an experiment to see if plants needed soil to grow, our bean plant shows that they definitely do not!

C.B. saw the bean sprout and said "it sure got big over the weekend!"

We added a new building material to our building centre for the children to explore. Straws and connectors! They built all sorts of fantastic things and had fun creating them: 

 

 

They also built with their old favourites too:

 We have been building boats in our class after some of the children expressed interest in boats at the art centre. After all the hard working of planning and building, it was time to test them!

 We learned that boats made of styrofoam and foam float much better and much longer than boats made of paper or cardboard!

Now that the warm weather seems to FINALLY be here, we ask that you please have a water bottle at school that your child can bring outside with them. Thanks! 

Indoor and Outdoor Learning

Today we had both exciting indoor and outdoor learning.

 A.I used a book to teach herself how to make a dog, using play dough. She explained the steps to a small group of how she created this dog!

 Some students were excited to see that the bean seed was growing, even though there was no soil in the cup. The identified the roots and the step. Many of the students were curious about why the outer shell of the bean was still in the cup.

            D.P. and D.R made tunnels in the sand for their cars to travel through.

These students were very proud of the seeds that they brought in, for us to plant.

This afternoon we went outside to observe our 3 classroom trees. Many of the students observed that the trees didn't have a lot of leaves yet. We asked the students why this might be. Q.G was quick to respond that it has been so cold out this year that perhaps the trees haven't been able to grow as many leaves as they usually do.

 

 Many students asked if they could take clipboards outside to record their observations! We were so proud of the initiative.

 L.M noticed that our third classroom tree had new grass at the bottom.

 The students were also excited to see the start of leaves on the third tree!!

We had an exciting day of learning. Make sure to ask your child about it!

Happy Monday!!

It was another busy day in our class today! We had a few children bring in seeds that they had found:

 M.C. brought some Lupin flower seeds.

 S.M. found a mango pit.

J.M. found a plum pit.

We're working on a chart of different seeds we've found so far.

We had music this morning, and after the very important work of practicing for our Spring Concert next week, the class got to dance their jig-jig-jiggles out!

The class was very busy doing surveys at centre time:

G.D. said in the house centre they were "learning how to be a family"

I.I. made a house at the light table.

 We went outside at the end of the day to check on the daffodil and tulip bulbs we planted in the fall (thanks again for donating them to our class Lainey!) We were very happy to see that they were growing :)

R.G. and A.I. were making pictures on the playground using things found in nature.

We gave the class a challenge!

We've been talking about seeds in our class, and we've looked at some different books about seeds, and so we gave them the challenge to be on the lookout for different types of seeds.We're very interested to see what type of seeds they find :)

Our little artists have been very busy at the art table again and we've run out of tape! If you are able to donate any tape to help our artists make their creations, we would really appreciate it (and we're sure they would too! :) )
