Some Friday Learning

Today we are having a great day. Here is some of the learning that's been happening:

Ms. Alannah wrote the morning message today and highlighted some familiar sight words that the children in our class knows. What a great strategy as these words really stand out to the students when they look at the board. See if your child can read some of these words when you show them this photo.

The students continued to look at books and make plans before building at the block centre.

Some students measured how long their structures were!

Some students made structures in the sand

Some students read with our ECE students who were with us this morning.

Many of the students recorded their friends' learning with our new camera that is just for them to use. Ask them about it!

A few students continued working on making our class alphabet book.

We also worked on our journals today.

G.F. wrote about himself!

M.D. wrote about a submarine.

M.A. wrote about the sea.

C.B wrote about a house for a mouse.

B.W drew a picture and wrote about a truck that carries houses!

The students are doing a great job hearing the sounds that are located within the words they are writing.

This week at the writing table the students found letters in a soup bowl - like alphabet soup! They were so successful at making words with these letters. Some of the students asked if we could continue this activity next week!

M.A. made many words on sticky notes and posted them to our chart paper.

Ms. Alannah reviewed all the words that the students made.

Ms. Alannah also read a story about the sea and ways that we can conserve water. Ask your child to tell you something they learning in the book.

Our students also went to gym in the afternoon. We also sang some songs with many silly actions. We did not get outside today as it was extremely cold.

Have a great weekend!!!

Check Important Class Announcements

There is a new post under important class announcements about Pink Day!

Purposeful Play and a Busy Day!

This morning the carpet was full of students making plans and building structures!
The Kindergarteners looked at pictures of buildings in our books and modelled their own structures after them. Here M.D is showing us the building he was recreating.

Structures could be found in the sand table as well where M. D and J.T were building using the wet sand.

B.W and Q.G spent time at the rice table experimenting with the measuring cups.

More learning and drawing by our fish tank!

Students played in our "aquarium" and stamped tickets with a hole punch. We've introduced a cash register so they can practice using money.

Mrs. David gave the students a "Geo Safari" videocamera and we're brainstorming what we want to videotape in our classroom. Students are excited to "tape their learning"!

While half of the class was in computers, the other half played a math game with Ms.Alannah. They were curious to know why students last week had an L and an R written on their hands! We practiced left, right, up, down, above and below. Here R.T is leading the class and the students are trying to copy her design by listening to her words.

We talked briefly about money and the different ways we can make $20 or $15. The students are getting very good at counting by 5s and 10s all the way to 100.We'll be watching to see how they use the money and cash register this week!

Our class was very lucky this afternoon and got to watch a play by Duffelbag Theatre! The students loved watching Shakespeare's Macbeth and one of our students was even picked from the audience to play a part in the production.

Monday Learning!

At centre time C.B and Q.G worked together to plan, draw and build a "tube". They got the idea from one of our structure books!

At the writing table, students are having fun with letters. They scoop out "alphabet soup" and rearrange the letters to make a word. Look at all the words students wrote down on sticky notes! They were able to make a lot of names and sight words.
Students at the art table cut out shapes. A group of students stapled their shapes together to make a giant Lunar New Year dragon. It took 4 students working together to build this creation.

In math we worked on our numbers. The students corrected Ms. Alannah when she mixed up the numbers and helped her get enough fish to feed the animals in our aquarium.

There was another large structure built this afternoon.

Students in the aquarium pretended to be scuba divers and sharks!
Some students worked with our co-op student on putting story cards in order.
The Smartboard was up and running this afternoon. Students are getting very good at working the Smartboard and using the markers to draw!

Friday's Learning

We had a fantastic day of learning on Friday!

We put out a new sensory activity at our sensory table. Some students spent the day investigating rice and how many cups fill a bigger container.

We did our February sheet to hang on our monthly writingwall.

Some students continued writing signs at the writing table for our aquarium, at the drama centre. The students have been responsible for designing our new drama centre. We feel this is important so that the students feel the classroom is theirs and also so that they take ownership of the materials in our classroom.

Some students have become interested in creating spinners, using cubes and testing out how well they spin. We've learned that the spinners work better on the tile than on the carpet and also that the spinners work better with can odd number of legs.

One student came and asked us to teach her how to make the number 2. We asked her where she could find "2"s in the classroom. She quickly and excitedly showed us some signs that continued "2"! Off she went to try and write a "2" properly and soon after, this student came to us and proudly showed us how she wrote some "2"s.

Ms. Alannah read a terrific book called "One" by: Kathryn Otoshi. This book is about how the colour red picks on the colour blue. All the other colours are nice to the colour blue but won't stand up to the colour red to stop picking on blue. This changes when the number one comes along and teaches all the other colours how to stand up to the colour red. See if your students can tell you what they learned from hearing this story. We had a great class discussion about the book!

The students enjoyed our new science centre. We placed some eggs at the centre. Each egg contains a mystery material inside. The students had to use their senses so that they could try and guess what is inside.

We have been working hard on not just building at our building centre. We have spoken about how architects make a plan before they give their plans to engineers and construction workers so that they can build their structure.  Many students have been looking at books to help them plan.

One student drew a picture of a structure and then used his drawing to build his structure! He proudly shared this process with the class. What a great job!

As you can see there as a tremendous amount of learning happening in our class on Friday! We are so proud of our students!!
