Heart art, self portraits and a lot more learning!

Today we got to use the Smartboard for a lesson on symmetry and self portraits! R.T was able to find the line of symmetry on an old school picture of Miss.Alannah.

We all found the line of symmetry on our faces and noted that we're not perfectly symmetrical (and that's okay!). Then Ms. Alannah modelled how to use the line to help us draw a self portrait.

During centres, students made their own self portraits using pencil crayons. We're excited to showcase their artwork on a bulletin board in our classroom!
Does this look like a student you know?

Some students worked on sight words and rhyming words with Amy.

Our Smartboard was put to the test as students sorted words that had a "Ch" sound or a "Sh" sound. We also used it for drawing!

Our kindergarteners have been adding more links to the friendship chain by writing about what good friends do. Here's a great example of two friends working together!

C.B and D.R-B worked as a team to move water from one bin to another. Here they are reading quietly on the carpet together.

Our art table was packed with students making symmetrical heart art! What a fun Valentine's themed craft. The students loved folding over the paper and seeing the symmetrical design that was created on their heart.

One of our ECE students brought in a lot of boxes for the students. The kindergarteners wanted to turn one into a car. They even made a bed for the house centre.

Q.G put on a puppet show for A.H and R.G using our felt puppets.

More symmetrical creations at the math table today!

At the end of the day, we all went outside to see how our class trees have changed. There was some great discussion about how the trees appeared to be growing and getting bigger. The students compared the bark on the trees. One of our trees is "bumpy and rough" but the other one looks "smooth and only a little bumpy".

They decided that trees need hard bark to "protect them" and that if the bark was squishy the tree might "fall down".

D.P told us that inside the tree there is "sap that is sticky and used to make maple syrup."

A group of students stayed outside to play a few quick games of "Octopus" and "Cross Canada".
