Wednesday in the Classroom

We had a lot of learning today. Take a look!

We have a new centre. Yesterday while I was asking students what they learned at centres J.S. said "I learned when we read the book called "Plants in Spring" that seeds don't just need water to grow, they also need sunlight. G.F. then said "Seeds also need soil to live".  Another student said "NO! Seeds don't need soil to grow". This led to can argument about whether seeds need or don't need soil to grow. We took a survey and students to see what most students' opinion was about this. After that we put wet paper towel into a cup with a bean seed. Now students will be able to see for themselves if seeds need soil to grow!

We also did some journal writing today.

Students have been using books regularly in our class to make plans to help them build and create. Students have also been using books to get new ideas and discover new information. G.F. was using a body book to teach herself how to do new exercises!

Q.G. made a plan of his latest spinner, before creating it!

M.D build a great tower today! He said that he was going to measure it!

Students also created play dough animals using a clay book we left at the centre.

Other students built structures at the sand table.

Students made some special cards today at the writing table.

Many students used cubes with letters on them to make their name. A.J. made her brother's name!

R.T. made a great creation at the light table.

G.D. made some more dessert squares for our home centre. G.D. is such a great baker. She shared with me that she loves to bake at home. I think I may go visit so I can get some real dessert from her! :)

Off to An Exciting Week!

Today was a very exciting day in our classroom! Ask your child about it. If they can't remember, take a look for yourself.

We had our school police officer come and visit! He spoke to the students about safety. He told the students that they should check 3 times before crossing a street, never play around cars (even in the garage) and also to be very careful in a parking lot.

Students also met "Elmer the Elephant". You may know this elephant, he's been at schools since shortly after World War II. A police officer who returned from overseas introduced him into schools around 1946 and he's been here every since!

We even talked about bike safety.
We even have an Elmer the Elephant Flag. If all students stay safe, the flag continues to

We also looked for signs of spring this afternoon.

We recorded our observations

At the end of the day we went outside and enjoyed the fresh air.

Co-operation!

This morning, a lot of the class decided they were going to have a picnic and started preparing the food for it:

Some children continued to investigate the new materials at the Science Centre and light table, making all sorts of things there:

This afternoon, we read a story about Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt. In the story, Sam Johnson discovers he LOVES to sew and wants to join the Quilting Club, and the ladies in the quilting club won't let him because they think boys can't sew (much to the shock of the class, who know that boys and girls can do the same things!), so he starts his own sewing club with other men and both clubs work on quilts for the county fair. Something happens on the way to the fair, and everyone co-operates (this month's character trait!) and solves the problem.  See if your child can tell you how they worked together to solve the problem.

After reading the story, we decided to make our own Co-operation Quilt! Everyone decorated a "patch" with whatever they wanted, and we put it all together and made our very own quilt:

Thursday folders were not sent home today because there was only one paper to go home about soccer :)
